At 10 PM Saturday night stores in Akihabara started selling boxed Intel Core i7 CPUs. Apparently hundreds of people were crowding the stores for a chance to get their hands on the new chip, and according to Computerworld the 965 processor sold out right away.
The Core i7 is Intel’s newest processor featuring a “quad” core, and will release officially on Monday Nov 16. The prices are going to range from around under $300 for the 2.66 Ghz 920, under $600 for the 2.93 Ghz 940, and just under $1200 for the 3.2 Ghz 965 Extreme Edition.
According to several test sites the initial comments on the i7 is pretty much unanimous that it blows away all Core Duo processors on benchmark tests.
If you are looking for a PC with i7 you are going to spend some cash as they are predicted at $1500 – $2500 price range for the initial release models. As with all technology though you will most likely be able to purchase a lower end i7 for less than $1000 by next summer if not sooner.
